It's fitting that John Ford filmed this in black and white. The entire mood of the story is grey. It's a well-told story of hopelessness, frustration, and determination, and - unlike most movies - it follows the book pretty closely.
My one objection to the AFI list - I think it's Ma, not Tom, who is the real hero in this story. She keeps the family going without complaint, doing whatever she has to do to help her children survive.
