This movie tells the stories of five days in the lives of 24 people. There's the star on the verge of a breakdown, the woman running from her husband, the wannabe singer...

Basically, it's much too much going on, so the audience doesn't really invest itself in any of it. You start following one story and it switches to another one.

The one thing I liked was that Lily Tomlin's children were deaf, and it had nothing to do with the plot. That's just how it was.

Ick. I fast-forwarded through huge chunks of this movie. How on earth is it the 14th best musical?

It's based on Bob Fosse's life, and the premise is that he's hovering near death after suffering a heart attack and is looking back on his life. His unappealing, sorry life. Maybe he was successful on stage, but his private life was just tasteless.

The movie had an artsy-fartsy uptown feel to it because of its dreamlike sequences. And that's about the most positive thing I can say.

The Bodyguard

There's a reason this wasn't on any of the best picture lists. It was stupid and predictable, and Kevin Costner's monotone is annoying.

Here is my testimony and confession - I believe I have developed a small crush on Marlon Brando (although it is the screen Brando to whom I am referring. Off-screen he was pretty messed up). Scout agrees.

Brando was wonderful as Sky Masterson. Frank Sinatra was scrawny and old-looking.

I liked this movie very much. How did I go this long without seeing it?

The French Connection

Top 100 (#70/93); Thrills (#8); Heroes - Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle (#44)

I didn't find this "out and out thriller" all that thrilling. The story of two New York City cops trying to gather evidence of a French mob connection to their small time drug dealers could have been thrilling, but with the exception of a scene or two, it really wasn't. Most of the movie was stakeouts and tailing people, with a car chase thrown in. Very little dialogue, just people following each other around the city.

Raging Bull

I hated Raging Bull for all the reasons I love Rocky. Rocky was vulnerable, Jake LaMotta was a conceited jerk. Rocky loved Adrian, LaMotta treated his wife like crap. Rocky was relatively clean, Raging Bull was full of vulgar language. I cheered for Rocky. LaMotta's downfall couldn't come soon enough for me. And while I didn't mind the boxing in Rocky, I sat through Raging Bull thinking what a stupid, stupid sport boxing is.

I will say, though, that Robert DeNiro did an amazing job.

I love Rocky. And while I hate endless sequels that basically tell the same story over and over, I love all the Rocky movies (okay, I haven't seen #5). #2 has his wonderful proposal to Adrian. #3 has Mr. T. #4 has the Russian story line. And #6 has Max Kellerman. How exciting is that? I'm bouncing in my chair just thinking about it.

Miracle on 34th Street

This was originally released in August and not advertised as a Christmas movie. What would you market it as if not a Christmas story? That's the point of the whole movie.

Anyways, I like this movie, but I like the 1994 remake better. Mara Wilson is adorable, Dylan McDermott is woo-woo, Richard Attenborough makes the perfect Santa (although Natalie Wood was "almost convinced" that Edmund Gwenn was the real deal), the costumes are great, the courtroom scene is both humorous and dramatic, and I always cry when Kris Kringle signs "Jingle Bells" with Sami.

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

When bank robber Jimmy Durante crashes his car, his dying words to the onlookers reveal where he has hidden his loot. This sets off a mad dash to find the money.

The all-star comic cast includes not only Durante, Tracy, and Keaton, but Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Jonathan Winters, Buddy Hackett, Phil Silvers, Jim Backus, Don Knotts, Norman Fell, Jerry Lewis, the Three Stooges, Carl Reiner, and William Demerest (who I'm finding in a lot of these old movies).

It's wildly funny, and I loved it. I think this just might be my rainy Sunday afternoon movie.

Shakespeare in Love

Passions (#50)

There's so much to like about this movie. Shakespeare, for one thing. And then there's a cast that includes Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, Geoffrey Rush, and of course, Ben Affleck (who I love in this role!).

But then there's the whole "in love" part, and that's where it loses me. Sex isn't love. And I never like love stories where one or both parties are married to someone else.

So I like this movie, and yet I don't.

Passions (#82)

Yet another one of those movies that was good except for one completely unnecessary scene. Why do they do that? It's so irritating.

Anyhow, detective or FBI agent or something Harrison Ford goes undercover to protect a young Amish boy who witnessed a mob murder and, of course, falls in love with the boy's widowed mother.

Few movies have made such a phenomenal impact on pop culture. Eric Foreman's obsession with the movie on That '70s Show was typical for the time. Star Wars was huge. Even kids like me, whose dads didn't let them see PG rated movies, knew every character. People saw it dozens of times - in the theater (remember, this was the olden days, before VCRs or Beta).
Why was it such a supergalactic hit? Simple - thrilling special effects (come on - this was 35 years ago), gallant heroes, a beautiful princess, funny sidekicks, and the most imposing villain to hit the big screen since who knows when. And to top it off, there was the magnificent John Williams score (which my favorite reader's piano teacher called "the definitive symphony for the 20th century"). What other score is so richly identified with a story?
Star Wars is worth every thrill and cheer. Very nicely done, Mr. Lucas!

Pretty Woman

Here's a great idea - a movie that glamorizes prostitution. While the movie is entertaining, the premise really isn't.

Not arguing with the Maximus as hero decision, but how is Joaquin not listed as a top villain? He was nasty, and he played it so well!

Overall (go ahead, hate me) I didn't like this movie. It was too gladiatory. I don't like it when people get beaten up and sworded and killed. I will say, though, that it was well-written and well-acted.

Blackboard Jungle

Hollywood generally does a good job portraying teachers, and Blackboard Jungle is no exception. It's a good movie about a teacher at an inner-city school who wasn't quite prepared for the challenges he was going to face.

The Sound of Music may be #4 on the musical list, but I still say it's the most beloved musical of all time. Sure, Fiddler on the Roof is my personal favorite, but Sound of Music is number one in so many other ways.

The songs, the story, the scenery, Julie Andrews, and most definitely Christopher Plummer all contribute something good to this movie. It's absolutely magnificent.

I'm so glad Christopher Plummer finally saw and can appreciate what a wonderful movie this is. It's actually kind of sweet how he says it. He gives all the credit to "Julie". And she is indeed remarkable. But he gets some credit. After all, he's the one looking over the car at her.

I would love to continue to swoon about this movie, as it is truly one of my favorite things. But I'll leave you with this parting thought -

The Seven Year Itch

This was a fun movie. Marilyn Monroe does a fabulous job as the innocent yet inhibition-less girl upstairs. Tom Ewell is funny as the married man who lives downstairs. When his wife and son go away for the summer, he meets the girl (who 'looks like Marilyn Monroe') and his Walter Mitty-like imagination runs away with him.

Many times throughout the movie I wanted to yell "Genesis 39!" at him, because for heaven's sake, is it really a good idea to invite the girl over for a glass of champagne, or to relax in the air conditioning? But then, of course, there wouldn't be a movie.

Tommy Lee Jones is an enigma. Sometimes I think he's not so bad looking. But he's not exactly good looking. I'm just not quite sure. But if I were playing Marry, Date, or Dump, I probably wouldn't dump him.

He's very good in this movie, which is as much about being the spouse of a professional singer as it is about the singer herself. Overall, the movie was good, not great.

West Side Story

On one hand, there's Maria's accent (both Natalie Wood and Marni Nixon), Tony's wussiness, and songs like "Who Knows" and "One Hand, One Heart". Plus also the fact that they 'fell in love' just like that.

On the other hand, there's Rita Moreno, wonderful dancing, and songs like "America", "I Feel Pretty", and "Officer Krupke".

In this case, the positives win out. Enjoy the great moments and laugh at the rest.

Bambi

How green of them to name Man as the 20th worst movie villain ever. What about the circle of life?

Still, the scene where Bambi loses his mother is pretty sad. Thank goodness for lighter moments, like when Bambi learns to walk on ice. And Thumper and Flower are pretty cute.

But Bambi becoming Great Prince of the Forest is a bit like Simba becoming the Lion King - I don't think either one can fill his father's shoes (or hooves or paws or whatever).

The Usual Suspects

I really do not know how this movie didn't make it into the top thrills. Masterfully written (well, except for all the swearing - but they're bad guys), suspenseful, impeccably acted. This is a great movie.

Yes, it's thrilling, and yes, Mrs. Danvers is evil. But it's hard to feel sorry for Mrs. DeWinter when she's so mousy and clueless.

It's still a good movie though, and it follows the book rather closely, which is always a plus.

The Miracle of Morgan's Creek

If you ever come across a Christmas movie by this name, starring Roma Downey and Alan Jackson, run away. This movie, thankfully, contains none of the above (ok, a couple scenes have a wreath in the background, but it's not a Christmas movie). It's not sappy and sentimental. It's funny. Like really, really funny. Betty Hutton is good, but Eddie Bracken is terrific as the man who truly loves her. And William Demerest (pre-My Three Sons) is Hutton's overprotective father, who will do anything for his girl.

The censors weren't too fond of this movie when it came out, but thankfully Preston Sturges made it anyways.

Watch this movie! It's one of Hollywood's hidden gems.

The Miracle Worker

Today is Special Education Day, so I thought it fitting to recognize one of the pioneers in special education. Annie Sullivan was amazing. Helen Keller said of her, "Once I knew only darkness and stillness... my life was without past or future... but a little word from the fingers of another fell into my hand that clutched at emptiness, and my heart leaped to the rapture of living."

This movie does a wonderful job telling the story of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan, their frustrations and their triumphs. Definitely cheer-worthy.

Mrs. Doubtfire

Laughs (#67)

It's got its funny moments, and its touching ones, too. But honestly, I think the concept of this movie is more sad than funny. Why can't a 40 year old act his age and be a father to his children? Why can't a couple love their children enough and take their vows seriously enough to work things out? Why do kids in broken homes always get stuck in the middle? But this is typical of far too many families.

So Robin Williams comes up with an atypical solution. And if you get past all the cross-dressing innuendos, it is indeed funny. And Mara Wilson is still her adorable little self.

The Godfather, Part II

Sequels, as a rule, should not be made. Most of the time, sequels are a lazy way to make a movie with a ready-made fan base. And most sequels are merely a sub-par rehash of the original plot.

Once in a while, however, Hollywood does it right. And they did it right with Godfather II. This isn't a retelling. It's the continuation, as well as the backstory, of the first movie. Fans of the first will undoubtably like the second (although I've heard that the third movie is a waste of time).

City Slickers

Laughs (#86); Stars - Billy Crystal (Current)

It is refreshing to find a comedy, particularly one made in the past twenty years, that isn't filled with sex, toilet humor, or offensive material.

That's one of the nice things about City Slickers. It's just guys out for some guy time having some good, clean fun.

And Didder, as much fun as I think a cattle drive would be, I know full well my bum couldn't handle being on a horse all day. So you may as well cross that off our Sister Day list.

American Graffiti

Top 100 (#77/62); Laughs (#43); Stars - Richard Dreyfuss (Current)

American Graffiti launched the careers of some pretty big stars -Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss, George Lucas, and Ron Howard (although he was already known as Opie). It's also a who's who of '70s sitcoms. Along with Howard, there's Cindy Williams, McKenzie Phillips, and Suzanne Somers.

The movie is about teenagers in the early 1960s, cruising the strip and listening to pretty great music. It's light, it's nostalgic, and it set the stage for Happy Days. A memorable look back.

It's irreverent and politically incorrect, but Blazing Saddles is funny. Mel Brooks knows how to make people laugh, and that's what this movie is all about. As far as I'm concerned, it's neck and neck with What About Bob? as the funniest movie ever.

Father of the Bride

A tender, funny comedy about a father coming to grips with being the #2 man in his daughter's life. I really like this movie, and while I loved the 1991 version, the 1950 film is better in that it doesn't have the over-the-top annoying Martin Short. Both are worth watching, but the original is definitely more relate-able.

The Karate Kid

It's Kung Fu meets Rocky. Daniel Russo is bullied until Mr. Miyagi teaches him karate and he kicks some butt. I loved this movie. Daniel is dorky (seriously - plaid shirt and camo pants? who does that?), but somehow the cute girl sees past that and realizes he's a decent guy. The bullies are nasty. It's sad that some kids really are that mean. And then there's Mr. Miyagi. I love him, and Pat Morita does a great job keeping him from being one-dimensional.

Giant

Top 100 (#82); Stars - Elizabeth Taylor (#7), James Dean (#18)

Netflix calls Giant a "sprawling epic", and sprawling is right. It sprawls over 3 hours. There's not much to the story - 25 years in the life of a cattleman and his wife living in Texas. Oh, and there's an oilman, too. Yep, that's it. Oh, and there was a nice little lesson about racism. And that's the movie.

I'm thinking James Dean must be really hot in East of Eden (which I haven't seen), because he's anything but in this movie - he's a nasty, greasy drunk. And in Rebel Without a Cause I thought he was effeminate and whiny. So I'm figuring his appeal had to come from his other movie.

Rock Hudson, though - ooh, baby. It's just so sad that he played for the other team because honey, he was easy on the eyes!

The Muppet Movie

The Muppets comes out in theaters today, and even though I'm anxious to see it, I know it really can't compare to The Muppet Movie - the original and forever the best. There are countless reasons why the first Muppet movie set an untouchable standard, but only two of those reasons really matter. Jim Henson and Frank Oz.
Henson and Oz were truly pioneers of their craft, and they were a perfect pair. Ernie and Bert, Statler and Waldorf, Kermit and Miss Piggy. They played off each other so well.
I read a review recently that said any other puppeteer doing Kermit the Frog is like somebody else putting on your mom's clothes and pretending to be your mom. She might do a fabulous job, but she'll never be your mother. It's just not right.
So yes, I will see The Muppets, but I will see it knowing full well that it is not, nor can it be, The Muppet Movie.

Laughs (#17)

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau make a great pair. These two work together magically, and their coupling with Neil Simon makes for a great movie.

When fussy Felix's wife kicks him out and he has to move in with slob Oscar, they both have to make some adjustments. Personally, I think the movie would have been funnier if it had focused more on the two of them living together rather than on Felix's ruined marriage. I'm guessing that's what the TV series did. At any rate, it was a funny movie.

No, it's not Morgan Freeman Day (although that would be a great day). This just happened to be the next movie.

I don't know. The movie was ok - not great. Maybe it's because I don't really care for Tim Robbins. Maybe because I don't believe all prison wardens are corrupt. Most likely it's simply because Driving Miss Daisy is more my kind of movie.
